DNS Belgium challenges students to put a server on the moon

31 March 2023

DNS Belgium was present at the Cyber Security Challenge. This competition is organised every year and is aimed at students in the field of computing and cybersecurity. As one of the main sponsors, DNS Belgium presented several challenges to the students.

Our engineers proposed challenges based on the DNS technology: they were used during the qualifying rounds. Our challenge for the final rounds? Going beyond technology and using their business senses. The students were asked to imagine a situation, in which DNS Belgium decided to become the first registry to put an authoritative name server on the moon. It would be placed there to expand our services and make our current DNS setup more resilient, but also for the digital inclusion of extra-terrestrial species.

Thinking out of the box

The participants had to do a risk analysis for the setup of this server and figure out what the issues could be in this scenario. Asked to assign probability values to each possible situation, they handed in the challenge after only 15 minutes. Our goal was to show students that DNS technology, though not new, still presents challenges and risks.

Our colleagues, present at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels explained to the students what DNS Belgium is and does and presented possible internships in our company.

“This isn’t the first year I’ve participated in this event, and every time I’m surprised as to the high level of knowledge and skills of the students, sadly I also continue to notice that DNS is not yet sufficiently known or loved among the students”

From observers to jury, our colleagues had to evaluate the different competing groups’ attempts at our challenge. The eventual winners of the Cyber Security Challenge came in third in our challenge, meaning that they not only showed technical skills, but also the business savvy to use them.
