For registrars

NEW: easier verification of Belgian registrants

31 January 2022

From 1 March 2022, Belgian private registrants will be able to verify their details online. It will then no longer be necessary for them to send us identification documents by e-mail. The verification will be done automatically with Itsme or eID. As you know, since November 2020, we have verified the identity of registrants in case of suspicious registrations before the domain name is added to the .be zone file. We do this registrant verification:

  •  to stop potentially fraudulent registrations, and
  •  to prevent a domain name from causing damage before we can intervene.

How does it work?

  • If we see that the holder data are incomplete or incorrect, we temporarily delegate new registrations to the name servers of DNS Belgium. So they are registered but not active.
  • The URL of the domain name refers to a landing page with the same information as in the e-mail we send to the registrant and to you as the registrar.
  • In the e-mail we ask the registrant to prove his identity.
  • The registrant provides us with a document to prove his identity.
  • Once we have received and approved the proof of identity, we activate the domain name.

What changes?

Does the registrant have Belgian nationality and is he or she a private individual? Then as of March 1, 2022, we provide a link to a web page where that identification is done automatically with Itsme or eID

Please note: Our registration system sees a registrant as a private individual if the 'organisation' field is not filled in.

  • 1 February on our test system (Try-out). We provide your technical contacts with separate information about the changes so that they can test in time.
  • 1 March on the live system.

The intention is to expand this registrant verification with multiple identification systems such as IDIN (for the Netherlands) so we can support all countries. In this way, we want to ultimately verify the identity of all registrants to make the .be zone is as correct and secure as possible.
